TACC is HIPAA/FISMA Compliant for UT System Medical Researchers

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas at Austin has announced the availability of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant computing and data systems for all UT System medical researchers and their collaborators. HIPAA is the federal law that protects personalized health information (PHI).

"We're very excited to receive the authority to operate with HIPAA data as it enables us to help medical researchers provide new capabilities that advance current and future research efforts across all UT institutions. Researchers with PHI data can now access the same resources at TACC that researchers in other fields have always had access to," Stanzione said.

TACC is now able to accept HIPAA compliant data sets for use on TACC platforms, specifically the Lonestar supercomputer and Corral storage system, which are available to all UT System researchers through the UTRC initiative. "We anticipate that other TACC systems will be HIPAA compliant in the near future."

Website & Blog

For more information about the UTRC, please visit the website, which functions as a gateway for UTRC users to access common tasks and tutorials. The website contains news articles, FAQ, price comparisons, and other resources for UTRC users. We will soon be debuting use-case examples, which will highlight researchers and projects that rely on UTRC resources. In the future, we hope to expand the offerings on the website based on suggestions we receive from researchers throughout the UT System.

The UTRC website also contains a blog intended as a venue for casual dialogue regarding the UTRC and related projects. Please feel free to send us questions or suggestions that we may feature as blog posts and visit the blog to get involved in the dialogue.
