Dr. Laura S. Howe-Martin, Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Howe-Martin is a board-certified clinical psychologist who leads the Psycho-oncology services for the UT Southwestern Medical Simmons Cancer Center and is also the Director of Behavioral Sciences for the Moncrief Cancer Institute. She began her career at UT Southwestern in 2008 after graduating from the University of North Texas and now works primarily with patients who are coping with major medical issues and mental health concerns. She has taught two core courses for several years within the APA-accredited doctoral psychology program at UT Southwestern – one on psychopathology and the other on cultural diversity – as well as provided dozens of didactic lectures and continuing education events within mental health. As a clinical professor, she engages in real-world training of doctoral psychology students and psychiatry residents, as well as mentors early career faculty within her department.
Dr. Howe-Martin has published several peer-reviewed articles on psycho-oncology, teaching, and supervision, and recently co-edited an introductory text on psychotherapy (Psychotherapy: A Practical Introduction). She is also the recent former chair of the Continuing Education Committee for the American Psychological Association. Dr. Howe-Martin has received the 2014 Outstanding Teaching Award for the division of psychology, the 2016 Outstanding Educator Award for the UT Southwestern School of Biomedical Sciences, and was named Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2022. Her current hobbies consist of reading fiction and drinking good coffee, while raising three children to become Nice Human Beings.
